ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Interpret and machine parts from engineering (CAD) drawings, hand sketches, and verbal instructions.

·         Must understand cutting tool geometry and can fabricate, regrind and sharpen drills, counterbores, and other production cutting tools.

  • Rotate and work in the department areas of tool grinding, model and tool making on a regular basis to meet production scheduling priorities.

·         Perform the required planning and laying out of work to very close tolerances for various types of tool room operations.

·         Determine equipment required, operating sequences and holding devices to perform complex tool room operations.

·         Perform internal, external, surface, drilling, pointing and other types of grinding operations or a wide variety of tools involving high specialized and unique items as well as standard production tooling

  • Select, mount, and dress grinding wheels based on specifications, tool materials (like carbide or steel), and job requirements
  • Run surface, universal, cutter, or drill grinders to sharpen milling cutters, lathe tools, drills, and dies to exact tolerances.

·         Inspect, test, and measure finished workpieces using precision tools like micrometers, gauges, and optical comparators.

·         Identify and recommend changes to tool and product design to facilitate fabrication/operation.

  • Collaborate with team members on prototyping and design changes needed on tooling.
  • Manual machining of parts e.g. toolroom lathe, milling machine, drill press, saws, pedestal grinder, tool grinder etc.
  • Work with machine operators to supply sharpening/modification of production tooling using grinders or by hand.
  • Perform duties to grind a wide variety of tools, plan and construct prototype products, construct, modify, and repair a wide variety of tools, jigs, fixtures and special holding devices for the tool room including building & repairing special fixtures with prints or verbal instructions.
  • May be required to perform miscellaneous machining operations and bench work involving filing, grinding, felting and assembling to extremely close tolerances in the construction, modification and repair of fixtures, precision gauges and special holding devices.
  • Maintain equipment in good working order by cleaning and lubricating machinery, replacing worn parts, and dressing wheels to ensure optimal performance
  • Job functions include but are not limited to all of the above.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Follow all company policies and procedures.
  • Follow safety rules and keep work area in a clean and orderly condition
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by leadership and support ISO 9000 requirements
  • Record production and maintain accurate time records
  • Use a wide variety of precision measuring instruments, hand and hand power tools.

EDUCATION:

  • Formal apprenticeship certificate or NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) certificate preferred or equivalent experience

EXPERIENCE:

·         3+ years of experience operating manual grinding and tool-sharpening machinery.

SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience and training in a variety of toolroom machinery (manual lathes, manual mills, grinders).
  • Deep understanding of tool geometries, rake angles, clearance angles, and metal properties (carbide, high-speed steel, etc.).

·         Proficiency in shop math, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate angles and dimensions.

  • Proven ability to work comfortably within tight tolerances (often within +/- 0.0002 inches).
  • Working knowledge of GD&T

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with custom tool fabrication and tool sharpening.
